Sweetgum Environmental is a full-service environmental consulting firm with national experience and recognition founded in 2011.  Sweetgum has teams throughout the country and has managed environmental, geotechnical engineering, and survey projects in every state including Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and USVI.  We go where we are needed and stay until the job is completed.  Our highly trained team of professionals maintains an excellent working relationship with federal, state, and regional agency personnel.  Sweetgum personnel have career backgrounds including prior employment within federal and state regulatory agencies and many years within private sector consulting.  We are recognized for excellent customer service, timeliness, attention to detail, and technical expertise.  Sweetgum owner Rob DeGraaf is a U.S. Air Force veteran and Sweetgum is certified as a Veteran Owned Small Business (VOSB) and Veteran Business Enterprise (VBE).

The Founder and President of Sweetgum, Mr. Rob DeGraaf, has managed projects nationwide for several decades and has a well-rounded background of public sector regulatory and private sector environmental consulting experience.  He is a Licensed Environmental Professional (LEP) to conduct Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) and has Phase II and remediation experience including petroleum compounds, metals and other contaminants and has prepared Site Assessment Reports (SARs).  Mr. DeGraaf is also a Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) and a FWC Gopher Tortoise Authorized Agent (GTAA).  Mr. DeGraaf also has Federal Government work experience and is a U.S. Air Force veteran.

Mr. DeGraaf has overseen hundreds of Phase I and Phase II ESAs and other projects such as engineering and survey projects throughout the country including Hawaii and U.S. territories (Puerto Rico and USVI) for private and governmental clients on properties to include: various commercial and industrial sites, large undeveloped parcels (including some which were thousands of acres in size), agricultural properties/ farms, multi-family residential, hotels, marinas, manufacturing properties, former steel mills, junkyards, solid waste landfills, pesticide plants, ethanol plants, mining properties (including phosphate, sand/ gravel), gasoline/service stations, automotive repair shops, auto body shops, dry cleaners, commercial printing shops, military training facilities (including firing ranges), etc.  Mr. DeGraaf completed a Phase I ESA for the 15-acre Amalie Arena property located in the Channelside District in Tampa, Florida, which included an assessment of the appx 450,000 sq ft building, comprehensive review of on-site facilities/ infrastructure, and over 100 years of history including manufacturing and shipping in the Channelside District.

Additional project experience includes wetland delineations/ mitigation assessments, protected species (T&E) surveys, wildlife relocations, water quality monitoring: chemical and hydrobiological analyses, including stream macroinvertebrate habitat assessments and sampling, and field taxonomy, and Stream Condition Index (SCI). Mr. DeGraaf has also conducted environmental impact assessments, and a wide variety of water quality monitoring projects to include freshwater (protocols for lakes, streams, wetlands, springs, confined and unconfined aquifers), and marine environments including estuarine sampling.
